Finding a Job

We know it can be a challenge finding employment in a new country, and we're here to help. It's important to get straight into job hunting when you arrive as it can take anywhere between two weeks and two months to secure that first role. Don't be concerned if the first job you land isn't your dream role - you're better to get your foot in the door and build up your UK experience which will make a big difference when you look for your next role.

How myOE Can Help

myOE has longstanding relationships with key UK recruitment agencies, so when you sign on with myOE, you'll be assigned a UK Account Manager, who will introduce you to the right people to help you find the right job for your skill base. We also recommend you review your CV for the UK market by downloading and formatting to our preferred UK CV Template.

Tips For Finding Employment

There are skills shortages in some UK industries, and in others there are hundreds of applications for the same role, so it's good to show flexibility in both your CV and your attitude to work. Individuals who are flexible on factors such as rate, location, duration and sector are being placed more quickly than those who are very specific. You simply need to get a foot in the door, so remember to be flexible on your first role, rate and location, as local experience becomes invaluable when looking for better work opportunities.

In general, you will be likely to earn between 10-30% more (in dollar terms) in the UK than in Australia or New Zealand so while the pounds look less on paper, your earnings will likely exceed your current income. The myOE team can further guide and assist you with your salary expectations.

Keep in mind that pay rates in London tend to be higher than other cities and regions within the UK due to the higher cost of living there - make sure to factor that in if considering a position in the nation's capital. Like anything, salary rates will vary according to your qualifications and experience. Here are some examples for industry-specific jobs in the UK:

  • Basic pay for investment banking graduates varies from £28,000 to £35,000.
  • IT Developers and Project Managers with a few years experience can expect to earn from £38,000 upwards.
  • A newly qualified Accountant (without Big 4 experience) an earn between £20p/hr - £25p/hr

The myOE team can pinpoint your salary expectations more accurately once you register with myOE.
